twelve

tin soldier

This beast was certainly not built to accommodate passengers, Felix thinks a few hours later, standing once more inside the shack, in front of the PR, rubbing his sore leg muscles and deliberating whether what he’s about to do is one of the stupidest things ever.

“Well?” Astra says, coming into the room.

She’s wiping her hands on a flimsy piece of material. “Hold on,” he replies, annoyed again. “I didn’t say I’ll play it. I just said I might.”

“You might have started to get on my nerves,” she says sweetly. He doesn’t retort this time. Not that she’ll let him act superior for once. “I know I’m getting on yours,” she adds.

A curse flies out of his lips.

He never used to curse so much. In fact, he rarely did at all. The other soldiers said words like that all the time, when they were goaded past their endurance, past their strength and patience -although in most classes it’s forbidden.

He doesn’t think he’s ever been tested past his endurance. Until now.

“Come on, come on, come oooon,” Astra says, sounding exactly like Karim. When he was four.

Felix had his first meal today. Real food, that is.

His stomach still feels weird.

He’s got a strange taste in his mouth, and he’s not sure he liked tasting the flesh of an actual animal -if it hadn’t been a matter of survival he would never have touched that half charcoal, half freezing cold piece she put in front of him. But the match girl insisted that it was ‘cooked’ whatever that meant, and his Sergeant always says that survival comes before anything else.

Survival at all costs. It’s a military motto.

Felix pretends to fumble with the controls on the PR, while in his mind he’s recreating the Fortnight of Terror -the scene in the Caribbean Astra was watching yesterday.

The pirate didn’t put survival above anything else. He remembers Astra’s bleeding little hand bursting through the surface of the ice before flopping back in the water. She didn’t put survival above all either. But did they have another choice? Does he?

“Am I waiting for something?”

Merc, is this girl impatient or what? “I don’t know, are you?” he spits at her. She stomps from the room.

Great.

He flops cross-legged to the ground. He supposes he’s going to have to start doing a bit of training on his own, now that it’s been three days since he’s been to school. Already his muscles feel weaker, somehow less than they were. Of course he hasn’t taken his Disc for the day. He hasn’t taken any pill as of last night.

He could so easily freak out right now.
